The inspiration for this painting came to me as the faithful heart of a waiting woman being likened unto a lighthouse. I saw her being depicted as a lighthouse, and had intended to put a ship on the far horizon, and a beam of light extending from her hand toward the ship. As the painting formed, however, it seemed to be a much more powerful image by leaving her yearning toward the one she hopes to see. The very emptiness of the ocean makes one wonder. What exactly is she doing? What does her heart see that we do not perceive? It must be his imminent return…
She might have been standing there for a moment, and just now raised her hand, or she may have held that arm extended as long as her heart has been longing for the return of her beloved. She is at the same time flesh and icon, beating heart and monument.
